Introduction
The East Kpo licence is located 120km from the capital Monrovia in Lofa County, mid-northern Liberia. The licence is located in low relief forest transected by the northeast -- southwest striking Kpo mountain range. Access to the base camp at Belle Yela from the Capital Monrovia is by a combination of tarmac road, laterite road and footpath.
Exploration Summary
A regional stream sediment sampling program covering 75% of the licence highlighted five areas for follow up work: Zormu, Zelekai, Glubia Hills, Kpyakpanu and Tenkeh Hill which are located within close proximity to NE striking greenstone belts.
Assay results from samples taken in 2006 on a detailed soil grid over the Tenkeh Hill prospect indicate a northeast striking zone of gold mineralisation. Results from a subsequent systematic trenching program are pending and will guide further work.
The results of a follow up geochemical survey over Glubai Hills in the south east hills has defined a 5Km long soil anomaly (>50 ppb), with a 500m long zone (>200ppb) open to the west. Results from Zormu and Zelekai soil grids are currently pending, and a soil grid over Kpyakpanu is planned.

Geological setting
The region is dominated by basement gneisses, greenstones and granite lithologies of the Liberian age province of the Mann Craton, similar to those described in the Archaean gold districts of western Australia, Canada and Tanzania. Of the three northeast striking greenstone belts that cross the licence, the northern belt exhibits regional scale folding with a steeply plunging NNW striking hinge in the Zormu area. The greenstone belts and regional foliation are cut by Jurassic aged dykes of Diabase, which infill NW-SE striking faults, thought to be a product of Atlantic opening.
Overview
- Remote sensing completed
- Licence wide soil survey underway
- Licence wide stream sediment survey underway
- Several targets identified
Glubai Hills Prospect
Soil sampling over the Glubai Hills prospect in the South East corner of the East Kpo licence has been carried out on a 400 x 50 metre spacing, with 432 samples collected. Results from this programme are pending.
Zelekai Prospect
Soil sampling over the Zelekai prospected in the xyz of the East Kpo licence has been carried out on a 200m x 25m spacing with 849 samples collected. Results from this programme are pending.
Zormu Prospect
Soil sampling over the Zormu prospect in the north west corner of the East Kpo licence has been carried out on a 200m x 25m spacing with 465 samples collected. Results from this programme are pending.
Kpo Mountain Prospect
The Kpo Mountain Range marks a large-scale structural disconformity, whereby the southern limb of a regional fold structure becomes truncated by a shear zone. Besides the structural setting, there appears to be a major contact between quartz-muscovite schist at the base of the mountain and amphibolite further up. Reconnaissance work on the Kpo mountain also identified significant quantities of quartz vein material and silicification.
A reconnaissance sampling traverse was taken over the crest of the Kpo Mountain with rock chip samples collected approximately every 2-3 metres. Results from this programme are pending.
Stream sediment sampling SW of Belle Yella
A total of 32 pan concentrate sample have been taken, of which 23 returned gold.

Overview
- Grassroots discovery
- Upstream from alluvial gold mining camps
- 2km long gold in soil anomaly
- Trenching programme underway
Tenkeh Hill Prospect
In 2005 pan concentrate samples were collected from areas previously worked for alluvial gold during a reconnaissance visit to the East Kpo licence area. The drainages tested derived from all the major ranges: Double Mountain, Kpo Range, and Glubai Hills. All but one sample contained visible gold, and assays of all the samples returned anomalous gold. The sample taken from Zawende Creek, next to the historical Tenkeh Hill gold camp situated 3km from Belle Yela, contained coarse gold including a 0.5g flake. The catchment for Zaewonde Creek backs up 400m from to a tightly defined drainage (700m across).
African Aura completed a regional soil sampling grid over the Tenkeh Hill prospect on the East Kpo licence. In total 587 soil samples were collected on a 100m spaced grid. The programme defined a major gold bearing zone along a ridge striking northeast for at least 2km and parallel to the edge of the Belle Yela escarpment. A follow up Phase-2 soil sampling campaign, on 25m spaced centres has been completed and three zones have been defined. The regional soil survey has also defined a second parallel northeast striking zone 1km west of the Tenkeh Hill prospect, possibly representing a faulted offset of the "main" zone which will be investigated in due course.
To date 900m of trenching has been completed over the Tenkeh Hill prospect, with two meter deep trenches targeting the quartz vein system.
